Day One: Virtual Classroom, Introductions
by Prof. Hangen - January 22nd, 2014
Hello all! Sorry it took me longer to post this than I had planned – but here is the material for our first day of class (“virtual”), Wednesday Jan 22nd.
I have posted a two-part intro lecture on Blackboard. The files were too big to post on this site, so you should navigate to Blackboard — > Learning Activities — > Intro Lecture Part I and Part II to listen/see them there. You can play/pause the lectures and go through them at your own pace, but you should allow at least 45 minutes to get through both. You might find it works best in Mozilla; if the Quicktime video does not play in one browser, try a different one.
I mention two links in the lecture, here they are, just for you to explore:
1) Bubonic Plague (Source: History Channel, “Mankind: The Story of All Of Us”)
2) interactive Global Cancer Map
And lastly, make sure you go onto Blackboard to “My Learning Journal” and write a short new journal entry under “My Reflections / Discuss” today or tomorrow – this will help me get to know each of you before our first class meeting. You can write about Porter’s book as you’re reading along in it, or about your interest in the class, and introduce yourself a little. I am the only one who will see these journal entries, the journal is set to “private” rather than being open to the whole class.
